The Maltings was a development of 44 new homes around a converted Victorian malt house in a conservation area in Newmarket.
The scheme comprised of two new apartment blocks and six townhouses. The conversion retained many of the period features such as the former kiln chimneys which have been remodelled into galleries respecting the building’s previous use.
The existing malthouse had most recently been used as a photographic film processing plant and the adjacent buildings were used as a paint manufacturing facility. There was significant contamination from the production of paint all of which was processed on site before being repurposed as inert fill.
